Does Maine offer ignition interlock devices (IID) for operating under the influence license suspensions?
A driver suspended in Maine for operating under the influence (OUI) is eligible for early restoration of his or her driving privilege on the condition the driver installs an approved ignition interlock device (IID), i.e. breath testing device. In order to be eligible for the IID, the driver must complete DEEP and pay a $50.00 reinstatement fee to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
The following eligible period applies to OUI suspensions:
First OUI offense may be reinstated after serving 30 days of the 150 day suspension if the person installs and maintains an approved ignition interlock device for the remaining term of suspension in the vehicle the person operates.
Second OUI offenses may be reinstated after serving 9 months of the 3 year suspension if the person installs and maintains an approved ignition interlock device for a period of 2 years in the vehicle the person operates.
Third OUI offenses may be reinstated after serving 3 years of the 6 year suspension if the person installs and maintains an approved ignition interlock device for a period of 3 years in the vehicle the person operates.
Fourth OUI offenses may be reinstated after serving 4 years of the 8 year suspension if the person installs and maintains an approved ignition interlock device for a period of 4 years in the vehicle the person operates.
